Has anyone some info on this beyond this piece? This piece reads like a press release from a boating manufacturing organization. It's clearly only representing one side of the issue.

http://oceanpolicy.com/wp-content/uploads/...ents-vFinal.pdf

Letter from the Coalition on spatial planning

Based on a cursory glance at the document, and the piece Paul posted, it looks more like access groups trying to maintain their use. In order to make an informed opinion, we'd need to find the opposing side of this and see what science they're using to try and justify shutting down fishing. I'm leary of any organization that makes blanket claims about how far inland these policies could be implemented, and quite frankly, given the Obama administrations reluctance to take on hydropower in the NW, I think a lot of the concern over this administration is overblown.

Still, there are some serious concerns raised that bear some research.

exactly. that's coming from folks that sponsor fishing shows on espn, and of course they will be concerned about the admin's stance on fishing. i'd be interested to see what the public comment was like before it was closed.

Perhaps you can provide a more non-partisan article on the issue?

Here's a few links I found this morning. First one is a writer bashing ESPN for the way they presented the story and the second one is ESPN apologizing. OH, and a picture of the Pres practicing his casting in the White House. biggrin.gif

Okay, so I glanced over the Whitehouse.gov document and I can see why some folks would be worried. The document clearly places a higher priority on clean water and ecosystem restoration over commercial and recreational activities. I do not, however, find that to be inconsistent with how land planning on public lands should be (and is coming back to being) implemented.

When an activity increases pollution levels, reducing the biodiversity or the ecological character of an ecosystem, then they will take steps necessary to correct that. That means reducing human use in some instances, as well as better regulating non-point source pollution.

Funny that they didn't mention asiatic carp in that (that I saw). Those buggers are going to be hell on the Great Lakes Ecosystem.

So, this is really no different than what Ted Turner and other ultra wealthy land owners do. Cool!

It absolutely was. Especially considering all the starving people in the world at the time that got 0 media coverage.

You can't call it "fishing" if the fish are dead and gone.
