I've been fly fishing for about 15 years. I used to live up in Summit County but now live in CO Springs. I've never fished the Rio Grande but am thinking of including it as a potential fishing trip this summer with my GF. She's still learning the basics.
I was doing some research on the area and found that the stretch between South Fork and Del Norte is gold medal water. Has anyone fished this section? Can you describe it? I'm looking more for a spot that will grant more action with the tradeoff being smaller fish. The GF gets bored really easily if you have to work hard to get into fish. A fish every ten minutes or so keeps her attention. Scenery is a plus as we either car camp and backpack. Car camping is fun if the scenery and fishing is good. Thanks in advance. |

The Rio Grande is big water and best fished by floating it. The South Fork of the Rio Grande is smaller water and quite fun.
A wonderful place to camp is River Bend Resort right out of South Fork 3 miles.(http://riverbend-resort.com/). You can camp right on the banks of the South Fork. It is good fishing for a beginner or anybody. The owners name is Dan Pruess. Make a reservation and tell him Bill recommended the River Bend Resort. |

Movie Buffs will remember Riverbend Resort as "KAMP KOMFORT" in the 1983 movie: "National Lampoon's Vacation". |

Thanks for the info! Do you know of any spots in this area that receive very little fishing pressure? Before the masses start getting all worked up. The general suggestion is that you, the angler, need to research and find those low pressured areas. Play with Google Maps or Bing Maps. Learn to work with the Colorado DOW web site to find access points. Use the internet to your advantage. The data, maps, and everything is at your fingertips. |

I totally stayed at this place about 3 years ago when I went to Wolf Creek. We stayed in a cabin with a hot tub in it. It was nice. |

I'm no stranger to researching new areas and scouting maps. However, I can't count how many times I've planned a trip just by scouting maps and have been disappointed. I am new here so I don't know the general vibe, but you're making it seem like all the members on this site get worked up about sharing information about spots they've been to. If that's the case, I will not ask again nor will I share any of my backpacking trip locations with as much detailed information as possible. I just figured that I was using the internet to access information via people that have actually experienced it. BTW-If anyone ever wants any info on backpacking the Ten Mile Range or the Gore Range with good high alpine brookie fishing, PM me and I'd be glad to share it. Same goes with info on the Blue River north of Silverthorne. |

General information is great - rivers, flies, tactics, etc. Specific locales are best left to PMs - after all the Internet is 500 Million people ( http://navigators.com/stats.html ) I wish I knew about the Rio, if your plans change to N. CO., PM me and I'm happy to help. |

The car and tent camping under the giant pine trees next to the river is great at River Bend Resort. -------------------- disinfect your wading equipment before entering another body of water.
wash boat /trailer, disinfect livewells / sumps, wash your wad'n dog. |

Might be worth looking at the Upper Rio Grand area....... well beyond Creede .......... Might be easier for your GF as the water is not so big and the fish are plentiful. Also farther from the crowds.

Also farther from the crowds. Ditto. There is good access with a known campground up by the damn. This is where I would go if I was wading with a less experienced fly fisher. The south fork is also a great option. -------------------- You can't catch a fish unless your fly is in the water.
