East Rosebud Creek, May 27, 2007. Air temp 75 degrees, Water temp 49, approx 250cfs. Water was down significantly from the same period last year. Water was running cold and clear. This creek is a wade fisherman's dream come true... the bottom is soft rock cobble, and you can cross every 100 yards or so, beautiful scenery in all directions, and complete solitude. Took my daughter, who is a rank beginner, for her second outing. Her first outing was on Rock Creek, and we hit a day when the trout were eager, so she'd see a take every other cast, which she'd miss. It took several hours before a fish finally hooked itself, and all was good with the world. Not so this time. While she did get some takes, she really struggled with mending, which is a very difficult thing to teach, and imperative on this creek. By the end of the day, she was getting the hang of it, but by then, the bite was off. She did stick with it for 5 solid hours, though, and seems anxious to try it again. We also talked a lot about reading the stream, and the eBud is a good place to learn that phase. Surprisingly, I caught rainbows all day, and fairly decent ones at that. The smallest was 11 inches, and the largest a solid 14. The East Rosebud isn't known for its rainbow populations, so this was a pleasant surprise. You'd most often see the fish a second or two before the take, rising slowly at first, then charging the fly before it could pass. As there weren't any obvious hatches, we pretty much fished a small olive stimulator trailed with an olive RS2-style nymph I've been experimenting with. I picked up fish on both, and the peach colored RS2 seemed to be the color. I did want my daughter to try nymphing, and tied on a small stonefly with an indicator, but she was tangling too often and preferred the dry. Having a beginner try nymphing with a 7.5ft 3wt wasn't real bright on my part. But what is fun about the Bud is that you can walk up on a stretch of stream, and identify a spot that might hold a fish, and be reasonably certain, with the proper stealth and presentation, you'll get a rise. Always fun!

I'm still waiting on a pic of this RS2 experiment in olive. Any chance you can post a pic?
