Unnamed Pond near Belt Mountains. Air temp 48 degrees. Gusty winds, overcast. Decided to check out a pond I've been hearing some interesting stories about. Turned out to be not much more than a large farm pond on some state land. Cattle have been using it regularly, and the mud was atrocious. Water had about a foot visibility, and near the bank the water had that brown, cow urine tinge, so I wasn't very optimistic. Nevertheless, the second cast with a small olive bugger hooked a nice, fat 16 inch rainbow. Dang near every cast after that either resulted in a netted fish or a nice strike, and not a single fish under 16 inches. One fat rainbow went almost 20 inches and probably 3+ lbs. Stayed with the streamer for a good 4 hours and finally got bored and tired, fighting both the fish, the mud and the wind. Made a note to return with the pontoon boat. The pond is a good size, but with the toon, I could anchor in the middle and cast to both banks. A real gem in the middle of nowhere. It must be spring fed from under the pond, as there were no visible inlets that held water.

Sometimes those prairie potholes can be a real gem. I fished on over by Martinsdale one time and was catching 4-6lb rainbows on dries, it was amazing. Hard to drag them out of the weeds with a light tippet though. Toons were not yet on the scene and I hadn't brought my belly boat. Good post.
